Starr Hill Area
The area around Starr Hill and Penn Mountain Rd. was a predominately Welsh Methodist community.  In the early 1800’s, the area was sparsely populated. However, the need for a church closer than Capel Ucha, three miles away, was recognized. In March of 1832, Penymynydd was organized and built on Penn Mountain Rd. However, Penymynydd, which is Welch for “Top of the Mountain” fell prey to a dwindling population in the area and faded out of existence. As well as the farms that dotted the area.

The cemetery’s oldest headstone dates back to July 1811, 21 years before the church was erected. There were at least eight burials before the church was constructed. The newest headstone is dated 1891.

Today, Penn Mountain Road is surrounded by State Forest land. Hunters as well as recreational vehicles, such as snowmobiles and four wheelers, frequently travel this dirt road. Partygoers tend to frequent this area as well.
