Preserving Investigation Evidence Integrity
Preserving Investigation Evidence Integrity
IMOVES
No matter what the outcome of an investigation, the original investigation data collection media, in it’s entire original form, should be preserved and archived for future reference and to maintain the integrity of the investigation. This includes ALL original notes, reports, tapes, pictures, data collection charts, etc.

Digital images and recordings should be copied, in their original, unaltered form, in their entirety, to a writable CD. Do not use re-writable disks as they can be altered at a future date, decreasing integrity. If digital images have been altered, lightened, darkened, etc., save them as new file and copy in the above manner along with the original form. Also document the enhancement processes in its entirety noting the degree of enhancement, etc. (Example: Lightened 20 %.)

When researching the investigation site, copies should be made of information used from any books, newspapers, etc. Always make a copy of the cover and inside pages necessary to retrieve copyright information from and to make referencing the material easier.

All hardcopy evidence, in its original form, should be in a file. Including scraps of notepaper. This would include printed emails, investigation notes, charts, pictures & negatives, reference material, etc.

All original investigation data collection media should labeled with the date, investigation site, and other pertinent data and stamped “Original”. Back up copies of investigation files should be clearly labeled as “back up COPIES” so as not to be confused with the originals.

Store all completely compiled files in a safe place. Back up copies should be stored in another location.

This may be costly and a little excessive but if your evidence is ever questioned you will be able to verify the authenticity because you maintained your evidence integrity.
